Past Saturday morning, exactly in the 2 hours between the downpour and the deluge, a band of about a hundred merry Belgians stormed Central Park with our national hero, Eddy ‘the Cannibal’ Merckx, the greatest cyclist of all time. For many cyclists and Belgians in the US (some came all the way from Belgium, Houston, Detroit, Minneapolis, Chicago and Atlanta), it became an unforgettable experience. Anyone who donated $100 to the Children’s Lightning Wheels Sports Team, got to ride with Eddy, who had come to town to be honored at Saturday night's gala for the Belgian-American Chamber of Commerce (BACC), also the ride's organizer.
At the Gala (W Hotel), Eddy received the Lifetime Achievement Award. No, not for his sports career. But because Eddy exactly embodies what the BACC stands for: successful entrepreneurship, while making meaning to society, always going the extra mile. Every single day, stepping up that ladder and trying to make it better then yesterday. It was the first time Mr. Merckx received an Award as a businessman.
It got his new company, with a main strategic focus on the US (for which the BACC will play a crucial role), on the prime time news in Belgium (VRT/RTBF) and all newspapers including the Wall Street Journal and De Tijd/l’Echo.
